These newspaper clippings capture an important chapter in Lake Garnett Grand Prix history.
Pictured are Claude C. Anderson Jr. and James J. Anderson, owners of Anderson Motor Co., photographed in 1963 at their location on 6th and Oak Street in Garnett. Claude C. Anderson Jr. was a continuous member of the Board of Directors of the Lake Garnett Grand Prix and played a pivotal role in elevating the event’s profile.
Through his connections, Anderson secured none other than Carol Shelby and his Cobra team to compete at the Lake Garnett Grand Prix. Shelby’s drivers included Ken Miles and Walt McDonald, bringing world-class talent to this Kansas road course.

Ken Miles went on to claim the overall win in 1963 — a remarkable achievement that links Lake Garnett directly to one of the most legendary figures in motorsport history.
Shelby would later become an icon through the Cobra and Mustang programs, while Miles earned international recognition for his role in Ford’s racing victories at Le Mans. To know they competed here in Garnett is a powerful reminder of how significant the original Lake Garnett Grand Prix truly was.
These clippings, believed to be from the Anderson County Review or Garnett Review circa the late 1960s, preserve that moment — when small-town Kansas stood alongside giants of the racing world.
